Is Arguing A Lot A Sign You’re Incompatible, Or Just Normal Friction

The Quick Strategy

  • Check How Your Nervous System Feels
  • Score Your Relationship Zero To Ten
  • See If The Pattern Follows You Everywhere
  • Score Your Own Communication Skills, And Theirs
  • Look For The Upgrade Before Assuming Incompatibility
  • Use Sustainability, Not “Normal,” As Your Real Measure

Start With Your Nervous System, Not A Label

Before asking whether you’re compatible or incompatible, check how your body actually feels in the relationship. Does it feel triggered and stressed most of the time, or generally settled? That answer tells you more than any label ever could.

Give Your Relationship A Score

Rate the harmony in your relationship zero to ten. Then rate the stress level separately. These two numbers together give you a real starting point — not a verdict, just information about where you actually stand right now.

Ask If This Only Happens With Your Partner

Check whether this same pattern shows up with coworkers, family, or friends — or if it’s concentrated entirely in your romantic relationship. If it’s everywhere, that points to something personal worth examining. If it’s only here, that points to something specific in this dynamic.

Score The Communication Skills On Both Sides

Rate your own communication skills zero to ten. Then honestly rate your partner’s. This isn’t about assigning blame — it’s about locating where the actual gap is.

Fundamental Incompatibility Is Real, But Rare

Sometimes communication genuinely breaks down no matter what you try — the lines keep collapsing regardless of effort. That does happen. But far more often, what looks like incompatibility is actually a missing skill set that was simply never trained.

Look For The Upgrade Before You Decide Anything

Before concluding you’re incompatible, ask what’s actually missing. What communication skills, if applied, would bring more harmony and fewer fights? Most couples have real room to upgrade before incompatibility is even the right question to ask.

Normal Isn’t The Right Word — Sustainable Is

Rather than asking if it’s “normal,” ask if it’s sustainable. Are you happy? Is this something you can keep living with, week after week? As a rough guide, something like one day of tension against four or five days of harmony tends to sit within a sustainable range. Multiple fights a day, most days of the week, usually signals real potential for an upgrade.
