You want to repair. You want to talk it through. Fix it. Get back to each other.
But if the body is still flooded β the repair will fail before it starts.
Regulation before conversation. Calm the body before the repair.
Flooded vs Regulated: Two Different People
The slide shows it perfectly.
When you’re flooded β you are overwhelmed, reactive, defensive, disconnected, and unable to hear or heal.
When you’re regulated β you are grounded, calm, open, receptive, and ready to connect.
These are two completely different people having two completely different conversations. Only one of them can repair.
Regulation Before Conversation
This is the rule. No exceptions.
You cannot hear what your partner is saying when you’re flooded. You cannot take in an apology. You cannot feel compassion. You cannot think clearly about what needs to change.
The flooded nervous system blocks everything repair requires.
Release first. Breathe. Move. Shake. Ground. Return to your body. Then repair.
Four Markers That You’re Ready To Repair
- Grounded β You feel your feet on the floor. Your breath is steady.
- Calm β The charge has dropped. You’re not still running hot.
- Open β You can imagine hearing their perspective without immediately defending.
- Receptive β You can feel something other than anger or hurt. Curiosity is returning.
Calm the body before the repair. The repair depends on it.
