🔺 7 Core Session Formats

What This Article Covers

  1. Rituals / Initiations
  2. Embodiment / Energetics
  3. Inquiry / Conversation / Strategizing
  4. Teachings
  5. Roleplays
  6. Sequences / Training
  7. Aspecting / Shamanic / Quantum

These are seven possible ways to format or guide a session.

Knowing them changes how a session gets held. Instead of relying on instinct alone, the right tool gets chosen for what a person actually needs in the moment.

1. Rituals / Initiations

A ritual marks a threshold. It tells the body something is beginning.

It can take many shapes:

  • Mantra — Repeating a single phrase until it settles the mind.
  • Shaking — Moving the body hard enough to shake off the outside world.
  • Breathwork — A fixed breathing pattern that signals: this space is different now.

Structure is the point, not the specific action.

2. Embodiment / Energetics

Where ritual is structured, embodiment is spontaneous. It follows sensation, not a script.

This format works directly with the body to create emotional and energetic release. It brings feeling back into a body that learned to disconnect from it.

  • Follow the charge — If tears rise, let them rise. Don’t redirect to talking.
  • Stay in the body — Ask “where do you feel that?” instead of “what do you think?”

The goal isn’t repetition. The goal is release.

3. Inquiry / Conversation / Strategizing

This is the coaching core. Questions do the work advice cannot do.

A good question doesn’t hand someone an answer. It opens a door they didn’t know was there.

  • Ask, don’t tell — “What did you actually want in that moment?” beats any advice.
  • Stay with silence — Let a pause sit for ten seconds before filling it.

This is the most traditional format, and still the most essential.

4. Teachings

Confusion keeps people stuck more than difficulty does. Teaching hands them a frame, a chart, a model, something to finally see the pattern they’ve been living inside.

  • Name the pattern — “This is what’s called the pursue-withdraw cycle.”
  • Draw it out — A simple diagram often lands harder than an explanation.

Once someone can see it, they stop fighting something invisible.

5. Roleplays

Understanding a pattern and interrupting it in real time are two different skills. Roleplay trains the second one.

Sometimes this means stepping into the role of a partner directly. Sometimes it means guiding a couple as they play out their own dynamic live.

  • Play the partner — “Try saying that to me like you’d say it to her.”
  • Freeze and rewind — Stop mid-argument and ask, “What just happened there?”

This is where insight stops being an idea and becomes muscle memory.

6. Sequences / Training

Some skills don’t get understood into place. They get drilled into place, in a specific order, until the order becomes automatic.

This format takes one very specific skill and trains it as a fixed sequence of steps, repeated until it runs on its own without having to think through it.

  • A Fight De-Escalation Sequence — A set order of moves a couple runs every time a fight starts heating up.
  • An Emotional Release Sequence — A fixed set of steps that moves a specific stuck emotion through and out of the body.
  • Drill It, Don’t Just Discuss It — “Let’s run the sequence three times right now, in order, until it’s automatic.”

Those are just two examples. Any specific skill, communication, energetic, physical, can become its own trainable sequence.

The goal isn’t insight. The goal is a sequence the body and mind can run without having to think about it.

7. Aspecting / Shamanic / Quantum

This is the format that’s hardest to name. It’s closer to an internal journey than a conversation.

It moves into what can be called the astral realm. A client feels into what a partner is experiencing, sometimes even embodying that partner’s energy, tuning into a spirit or a frequency directly.

  • Feel into them — “Close your eyes. Become her for a moment. What does she feel?”
  • Channel, don’t guess — This isn’t imagination. It’s tuning into something real.

This format is the newest to be named, and the one with the most unexplored depth.

These Seven Formats Aren’t A Checklist

None of them ranks above the others. A session might move through ritual, into embodiment, into inquiry, then briefly into aspecting, following what the moment calls for.

This structure fits individuals and couples clearly. Groups likely need more formats still waiting to be mapped.

Naming them simply makes it easier to choose on purpose, instead of relying on instinct alone.
