What It Is
Gaslighting is making someone doubt their own memory, perception, or sanity — on purpose, over time.
Not lying about a fact. Rewriting reality itself, until the other person stops trusting their own read of it.
What It Sounds Like
- “That never happened.”
- “You’re remembering it wrong.”
- “I never said that.”
- “You’re too sensitive, you’re overreacting.”
- “You’re crazy, you know that?”
Why It Works
Nobody has a perfect memory. There’s always a little room for doubt to slip into.
Gaslighting doesn’t need to win the argument. It just needs to widen that small room of doubt until you start managing yourself instead of the actual issue.
It’s Not One Conversation. It’s A Hundred Small Ones.
No single instance usually feels dramatic enough to name.
It’s the accumulation — denial after denial, small rewrite after small rewrite — that eventually adds up to someone who no longer trusts their own read of their own life.
Gaslighting Vs. Genuinely Misremembering
- Misremembering — “Actually I think it happened this way” — open to being wrong, open to the other person’s version too
- Gaslighting — total certainty, no room for the other version, and it always lands on the same person being wrong
The Tell
You start narrating your own life before you’ve even lived it — rehearsing how to describe an event so it will be believed, before it’s even over.
That habit alone is usually the clearest sign something’s off.
What It Costs Over Time
Not just the specific facts in dispute. The whole muscle of trusting yourself.
Once that muscle weakens, it doesn’t just affect this relationship — it affects every judgment call after it.
The Way Out
Write things down. Say them out loud to someone outside the relationship. Trust the version that existed before the conversation started.
An outside reference point is often the only thing that can break the loop once you’re inside it.
