I’m sure you experienced this situation before!
You’re having this conversation with a friend and instead of listening to your point they force their views on you!
It feels like someone trying to control what you must think!
How does that feel when that happens?
Resentment? Resistance? Getting reactive?
It feels forceful, right?
As if two grown up human beings can’t even consider the fact that there are more than one opinion on a given topic!!!
It’s crazy and soooo simple!
Here are a few possible responses when that happens:
“It looks like we have a different opinion on this topic and that’s ok”
“It’s ok to disagree on this”
“I respect your believes and I have my own truth on this topic”
These are MATURE responses, right?
If your friend insists, here is what you can say:
“I DON’T GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO TELL ME WHAT TO THINK”???
“LOOKS LIKE I DON’T PLAY LIFE BY YOUR RULES”???
>>> WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU SAY??
A conversation is always a cocreation!
What I’m giving you here is a trick to deflect a potential escalation into a wasted argument.
It is essential on your end to drop the idea of forcing YOUR opinion on your friend too!
Be happy to hold two point of views in the conversation as you both relax in the satisfaction to stay connected even if you disagree on something!
Makes sense right?
? HAVE YOU TRIED A SIMILAR DE-ESCALTION STRATEGY BEFORE?
? DID IT WORK?
? DID YOU MANAGE TO STAY CONNECTED?
? WHAT ELSE COMES TO MIND?
