Master Your Fights: Seven Steps Coaching Strategy

Every fight carries a hidden opportunity. Not to win, not to be right, but to come back to yourself. This is the seven steps coaching strategy I use to guide someone from the heat of a trigger to a real, grounded upgrade. The seven steps are: Charge Score, Release, Voice It, Self Reflect, Positive Reframe, New Narrative, and Upgrades.

1. CHARGE SCORE

Client names where they’re at, 0-10, before anything else happens.

  • “I’m at an 8, my hands are literally shaking.”
  • “Probably a 5, I’m irritated but I can still think straight.”
  • “Honestly a 2, I’m mostly just tired from it, not activated anymore.”

2. RELEASE

Client discharges the charge through the body β€” not through talking.

  • Shaking their arms and legs out for a few minutes, then a few sharp exhales.
  • Stomping around the room, low growling sounds, letting the jaw unclench.
  • Fast “fire breath” cycles until their shoulders visibly drop.

3. VOICE IT

Client says the raw, unfiltered story β€” no editing for fairness or maturity.

  • “She thinks I’m useless and she’s probably right.”
  • “He only cares about himself, I’m just there to manage his life.”
  • “Nobody in this relationship actually sees what I do.”

4. SELF REFLECT

Client traces the raw story down to the root belief, then checks it against reality β€” real strengths, real gaps.

  • “The real belief is ‘I’m not enough as a provider’ β€” but honestly, on a 0-10, I’d rate myself a 6, not a 0.”
  • “Underneath it’s ‘I’m unlovable when I’m difficult’ β€” but I can name real ways I show up for people.”
  • “The core line is ‘I always mess up what matters’ β€” but there are three specific things I’m actually solid at.”

5. POSITIVE REFRAME

Client reframes the gap as growth, not failure, and reframes the partner’s behavior as invested pressure, not attack.

  • “I’m not failing, I’m still building this β€” that’s different from broken.”
  • “She’s not attacking me, she’s scared because she cares how this turns out.”
  • “This isn’t proof I’m bad at conflict, it’s proof I haven’t practiced this skill yet.”

6. NEW NARRATIVE

Client writes the new sentence they’ll actually say next time, replacing defense with honesty.

  • “You’re right, I’m not consistent yet β€” I’m working on it, I’m not going to pretend otherwise.”
  • “I hear that landed hard. That wasn’t my intention, and I want to understand what you needed instead.”
  • “I’m not perfect at this, but I’m not checked out either β€” I’m here, and I’m trying.”

7. UPGRADES

Client commits to specific, time-bound actions that close the actual gap.

  • “Every Sunday, 15 minutes, I check my numbers so I’m never vague again.”
  • “Within 24 hours of feeling tension, I bring it up out loud instead of sitting on it.”
  • “By next month, I have an actual system in place instead of relying on motivation.”
