The fight happened inside a story.
The story you were telling yourself about what was happening β what it meant, what they intended, what it said about the relationship.
That story was probably not the full truth. Choose the mature one.
Fear Wears The Mask Of Anger. Pain Wears The Mask Of Criticism.
This is what the slide reveals. And it’s one of the most important truths in repair.
When someone is attacking you β underneath the attack is almost always fear or pain.
When you were attacking β underneath your attack was probably fear or pain too.
See through the mask. Find what was actually there.
Old Story vs New Story
Old Story: “They did this to me.”
Result: Blame. Defensiveness. Escalation. Distance. Pain repeats.
New Story: “They were hurting. I did too.”
Result: Curiosity. Compassion. Understanding. Connection. Healing begins.
Same fight. Completely different repair. Because the story changed.
Meaning Changes Everything
The meaning you assign to what happened determines everything that follows.
Assign “attack” β and you defend.
Assign “pain” β and you connect.
You get to choose the meaning. Choose the mature story. It’s the one that leads to healing.
Choose The Mature Story
The mature story is not naive. It’s not pretending everything is fine.
It’s seeing the full truth β including the pain underneath the behavior.
“They were hurting. I did too. We were both doing the best we could in a hard moment.”
That story opens the door to real repair. Choose it.
