“They Can’t Text Me After 10pm” Isn’t A Boundary
“I told them they can’t text me after 10pm unless it’s an emergency. That’s my boundary.”
That’s not a boundary. That’s a rule.
The Real Difference
A boundary guides your own behavior.
A rule tries to control someone else’s.
What The Boundary Version Actually Sounds Like
“I don’t respond to texts after 10pm.”
Same situation. Completely different ownership. One tells them what they can’t do. The other tells them what you will do.
Standards Get Confused With Expectations Too
“I expect people in my life to show up when they say they will. That’s my standard.”
That actually sounds like an expectation.
Here’s The Split
A standard is about what you allow in your life.
An expectation is about what you hope someone else will do.
Put Side By Side
- Standard — “I surround myself with dependable people.”
- Expectation — “This specific person will show up on time.”
Your standards shape your circle. Your expectations set the stage for disappointment or communication.
Four Questions That Sort It Out
- What Am I Committed To Doing Or Not Doing? — That’s your boundary.
- What Do I Wish Others Would Do? — That’s your expectation.
- What Do I Allow Or Not Allow In My Life? — That’s your standard.
- What Am I Trying To Control? — That’s probably a rule, and it might need adjusting.
It’s Not About Saying Things Louder
It’s about saying them clearer.
The Mix-Up Nobody Notices They’re Making
Some people think their boundaries apply to other people.
They don’t understand that’s actually their expectation of other people. The wording feels interchangeable until you actually sit with it, and then the difference becomes obvious.
If you keep setting “boundaries” that don’t seem to hold, that’s worth looking at closely. Reach out for coaching and let’s sort out which ones are actually yours to enforce.
