EVERY FIGHT HAS A NUMBER
Most people never name it. That’s the problem.
A 2 and an 8 need completely different tools.
Naming the number changes everything.
WHY THE NUMBER MATTERS
You can’t use a level-2 tool on a level-8 fight.
You can’t use a level-8 tool on a level-2 moment.
The number tells you which move to make.
SAY THE NUMBER OUT LOUD
This single habit changes the whole dynamic.
- Name It — “I’m at a 6 right now.”
- Ask Them — “Where are you at — what number?”
- Check Again — Numbers shift fast. Check every few minutes.
LEVEL 0 TO 2 — BARELY A SPARK
This is annoyance. A flicker. Almost nothing.
This is the easiest level to fix — and the most ignored.
- Name The Flicker — “That comment kind of stung a little.”
- Address It Now — “Can I say something small before it grows?”
LEVEL 2 TO 4 — TENSION IS BUILDING
Voices get a little sharper. Bodies get a little tighter.
This is still easy — if you catch it here.
- Slow Down — “Let’s pause for a second before this gets bigger.”
- Get Curious — “Help me understand what’s going on for you.”
LEVEL 4 TO 6 — THE FIGHT IS REAL NOW
Defensiveness kicks in. Old patterns show up.
This is the tipping point. What you do here decides everything.
- Catch The Wave — Feel the charge. Don’t run from it. Stay present.
- Soften First — One hand on their shoulder before another word.
LEVEL 6 TO 8 — THIS IS HEATED
Voices are loud. Words are sharper. Bodies are activated.
This is where most couples lose control — or learn the most.
- Stop The Escalation — “I need to stop for a second.”
- Regulate The Body — Stand up. Shake it out. Breathe deep.
LEVEL 8 TO 10 — THIS IS A FIRE
This is flooding. Nervous systems are overloaded.
Nothing productive happens here. Nothing.
- Exit Clean — “I need 20 minutes. I’m coming back at 9pm.”
- No More Talking — Words only make this worse right now. Stop.
THE GOAL ISN’T ZERO
Couples who never hit a 4 aren’t healthy. They’re avoiding.
The goal is catching it early — and never hitting a 9.
USE THE NUMBER AS A SIGNAL
A number isn’t a weapon. It’s information.
“I’m at a 7” isn’t blame. It’s data your partner can use.
The couple who shares numbers — shares power.
START TONIGHT
Next disagreement — no matter how small — name the number.
Just say it. “I think I’m at a 3.”
Watch what happens when both of you know where you stand.
