There’s a critical difference between a need and a want.
And most fights get stuck because people confuse the two.
Mixing them creates confusion. Separating them creates clarity.
Need vs Want: Know The Difference
The slide shows this beautifully.
Need: “I need to feel respected.” This is non-negotiable. It’s a fundamental requirement for you to feel safe and connected in the relationship.
Want: “I’d love more date nights.” This is a preference. Beautiful to have. Adds richness. But not a requirement.
One is non-negotiable. The other is a preference. Treat them differently.
Why The Distinction Matters
When you treat a want like a need — you create unnecessary pressure and make your partner feel like they’re constantly failing.
When you treat a need like a want — you undersell what’s actually required, and it never gets properly addressed.
Getting this distinction right changes the entire conversation.
How To Separate Them In Real Time
- Ask Yourself — “Is this something I require to feel safe and connected, or is it something I’d love but could function without?”
- Name The Need — “What I actually need here is to feel like we’re a team.”
- Name The Want — “What I’d love is for us to have one night a week that’s just ours.”
- Say Both Clearly — Let your partner understand the difference between what’s required and what would make things richer.
Know the difference. Say it clearly. Wants and needs require different conversations.
