The Situation
He comes home. Phone out, TV on, half-there.
You let it slide most nights. Then it builds.
And you explode over the dishes.
What This Fight Actually Is
Not about the dishes.
Not even about the phone.
It’s a starved need for connection, dressed up as an argument about chores.
The Usual Triggers
- No protected time together during the week
- Checking out β phone, TV β the moment he walks in
- Picking fights about small stuff instead of naming the real need
- Fear that saying “I miss you” sounds needy
- Assuming connection will just happen on its own
Don’t Say
- “You never pay attention to me.”
- “You’d rather watch TV than talk to me.”
- Nothing β then snapping about the dishes instead
All three bury the real ask.
Say This Instead
- “I miss having real time with you.”
- “Do you feel like we could use more connection too?”
- “Can we protect some time together this week?”
Nothing Is Wrong With Him Checking Out
He’s tired. That’s normal at the end of a day.
The problem isn’t the checkout β it’s that nothing ever balances it.
The Missing Ritual
No planned date night.
No recurring moment that’s just yours.
Leave it to chance, and it won’t happen.
Ask First, Then Propose
Start with a question, not a demand:
“Do you feel like we could use more time together too?”
If yes β pick a night. Same time, every week.
Make It Non-Negotiable
- Put it on the calendar as recurring
- Shift the day if you must β never cancel
- Take turns planning it
Don’t Turn It Into A Business Meeting
No status updates on the week.
Make it fun. Make it sexy. Make it something you’re both excited for.
