They’re Not Really “There” Right Now
Their eyes are open. Their mouth is moving. But logic left the building.
You’re talking to a nervous system in survival mode, not the person you know.
Your Job Isn’t To Win. It’s To Create Safety.
Nothing gets solved while someone is flooded.
The only real goal right now is helping their system come back down.
Mature Move: Lower Your Own Voice First
- Stay Soft — Speak quieter, not louder.
- Slow Down — Match calm, not chaos.
Your nervous system can pull theirs down. Or drag it further up.
Mature Move: Name What You See
- Say It Plainly — “I can see you’re really activated right now.”
- No Judgment — Just an observation, not an accusation.
Naming it calmly can interrupt the spiral before it peaks.
Mature Move: Give Them An Exit Without Abandoning Them
- Offer Space — “Take the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.”
- Set A Return Point — “Let’s come back to this in twenty minutes.”
Space with a promise to return is completely different from walking away in silence.
Mature Move: Protect Your Own Boundary Without Attacking
- Stay Grounded — “I want to hear you, but I need you to lower your voice.”
- Hold The Line Calmly — Firm, not defensive.
Boundaries can exist without escalation.
Mature Move: Reconnect Once They’re Regulated
- Check In — “How are you feeling now?”
- Reopen Gently — “Can we talk about what happened?”
Real conversation only works once both nervous systems are actually online again.
Immature Move: Match Their Intensity
- Raise Your Voice — Fighting fire with fire.
- Talk Faster — Escalating the pace together.
Two flooded people in one room is a guaranteed explosion.
Immature Move: Diagnose Or Mock Them
- “You’re Overreacting” — Instantly adds fuel.
- “Calm Down” — The two most triggering words that exist.
Telling a flooded person to calm down has never once worked.
Immature Move: Chase Or Demand Resolution Now
- Follow Them — Trying to force the conversation to finish.
- “We Need To Talk About This Now” — Guarantees zero progress.
Chasing a flooded person only pushes their system further into threat.
Immature Move: Absorb Everything Or Explode Back
- Silent Suffering — Taking every word without protecting yourself.
- Explosive Retaliation — Matching cruelty with cruelty.
Neither extreme creates safety. Both extremes create damage.
Immature Move: Bring Up The Content While They’re Still Flooded
- Push The Topic — Trying to finish the argument mid-flood.
- Demand An Apology On The Spot — Before they’ve even come back down.
Anything said to a flooded brain doesn’t actually land. It just gets filed as another attack.
The Skill That Changes Everything
Staying regulated while someone else is flooded is one of the hardest relationship skills there is.
Master it, and you become the calm the whole relationship can lean on.
