10 Compliance Tests Manipulators Use To See How Far They Can Push You

Before someone manipulates you in a big way, they usually test the water in a small one. Here are 10 of the tests, and why each one is more dangerous than it looks.

1. The Small Ask Test

A tiny, harmless-seeming request. Nothing worth refusing over.

Why it’s toxic: it’s not really about the request. It’s a foot in the door, checking whether you comply automatically so a bigger ask can follow later.

2. The Boundary Push Test

You state a boundary. They cross it anyway, just slightly, just once.

Why it’s toxic: if you don’t enforce it, they’ve just learned your boundaries are suggestions, not rules.

3. The Chronic Lateness Test

Showing up late, again and again, with no real consequence.

Why it’s toxic: it quietly measures how much disrespect of your time you’ll absorb before you say something.

4. The Favor Escalation Test

  • Start Small — A ride, a loan of $20, a quick errand.
  • Escalate Fast — Bigger favors follow once the small ones go unquestioned.

Why it’s toxic: each yes becomes the evidence used to justify the next, bigger ask.

5. The Silent Treatment Test

Sudden withdrawal. No explanation. Just silence.

Why it’s toxic: it checks whether you’ll chase, apologize, or anxiously fill the silence — training you to over-function every time they go quiet.

6. The Jealousy Test

Flirting with someone else, right in front of you, just to watch your reaction.

Why it’s toxic: your discomfort becomes information about how much insecurity they can provoke and still keep you around.

7. The Money Test

Sounds like: “Can you cover this, just this once?” Then it happens again. And again.

Why it’s toxic: money that flows one way without resistance becomes an expectation instead of a favor.

8. The Isolation Test

A gentle suggestion to skip seeing a friend. Then family. Then another friend.

Why it’s toxic: every skipped visit checks how much of your outside world you’ll trade away without pushing back.

9. The Skipped Apology Test

They do something wrong. No apology comes. Life just continues as if nothing happened.

Why it’s toxic: if you show up the same as always, you’ve just confirmed accountability isn’t required to keep your presence.

10. The Yes Ladder Test

A string of easy agreements, one after another, each one small enough to barely notice.

Why it’s toxic: by the time a real ask arrives, saying no suddenly feels inconsistent with everything you already agreed to.

None of these tests are accidents, and none of them require you to keep passing them. If you keep noticing this pattern in your relationships, reach out for coaching and let’s break the pattern together.
