The Pattern Psychology Keeps Finding
When someone treats you poorly, it’s often not because you did something wrong.
It’s frequently because some part of them perceives you as better than they currently feel about themselves β and tearing you down is easier than sitting with that.
What Actually Activates It
- Confidence
- Emotional intelligence
- Integrity
- Authenticity
- Beauty
- Intelligence
Qualities someone secretly admires, longs for, or feels threatened by can activate an old, unconscious wound of shame or inadequacy β long before either person is even aware anything just happened.
The Shadow Jung Was Pointing At
Carl Jung described the shadow as the unconscious part of the psyche holding everything we learned to reject in ourselves β qualities, emotions, and desires we decided, somewhere along the way, weren’t safe to claim.
The Rewrite Happens Fast
Rather than consciously feeling “I’m not good enough for this,” the psyche protects itself instantly, through projection and devaluation.
The story flips in real time:
- “I’m not the problem β they are.”
- “They’re too much.”
- “They’re too needy.”
- “They’re too emotional.”
- “They need too much attention.”
Relief, Not Resolution
From a Jungian view, this move genuinely does protect the ego β for a moment.
But projection and devaluation distort reality. As long as the blame stays pointed outward, the behavior never gets recognized as what it actually is β which means nothing about it can change.
The Actual Goal Isn’t To Erase The Shadow
It’s to become conscious of it. The more a person can recognize their own patterns, the less those patterns get projected onto whoever happens to be standing closest.
What This Means When You’re On The Receiving End
Her criticism of your confidence, your steadiness, or your emotional intelligence may say far more about her relationship to those qualities in herself than it says about you.
The Question Worth Asking Yourself Too
Next time you catch yourself about to devalue or criticize someone, pause before the words land.
- What is this person’s behavior actually making me feel about myself?
- What are they showing me about myself that I don’t like?
- What are they awakening in me that I haven’t made peace with yet?
Everyone’s A Mirror
That reflection can be used for good. Turned toward, instead of projected outward, it’s one of the more direct paths back to yourself.
